A youth from Himachal Pradesh is among three Indian nationals detained by US authorities after the United States Coast Guard seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker, Marinera, in the North Atlantic on Wednesday.
The detained Indian has been identified as Rikshit Chauhan, a resident of Ward 7 on the outskirts of Palampur, under the Palampur Municipal Corporation. The tanker, earlier named Bella 1, was reportedly carrying crude oil linked to Venezuela and was en route to Russia when it was intercepted by US authorities.
According to available information, the vessel had 28 crew members on board at the time of seizure, including three Indians, 20 Ukrainians, six Georgians and two Russians. All crew members are currently under detention, pending further legal and diplomatic procedures.
A team from The Tribune visited Rikshit’s family on Thursday, where anxiety and distress were evident following the sudden loss of contact with him.
Rikshit’s father, Ranjit Singh, said the family last spoke to him five days ago. “We have not received any official information so far. Neither the Indian government nor the Russian authorities have contacted us,” he said, visibly emotional. “Our entire family is deeply worried about his safety.”
Ranjit Singh said Rikshit had joined the Merchant Navy in August last year, and this was his first overseas assignment. “We were proud of his achievement, but now everything is overshadowed by fear and uncertainty,” he added.
Family members said a representative of the Merchant Navy Officers Association of India has contacted them and informed that the Russian government is closely monitoring the situation. Russia has reportedly urged the United States to ensure humane and dignified treatment of all crew members and has called for their early repatriation to their respective countries.
Meanwhile, Palampur MLA Ashish Butail reached out to the family and assured them of all possible assistance. He has written to Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta, urging him to take up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs to intensify diplomatic efforts for Rikshit’s early release and safe return.
The incident has raised serious concerns among the families of the detained crew members and within diplomatic circles, as it involves issues related to international maritime law, sanctions and the rights of civilian seafarers. Families are now awaiting official communication and a humanitarian resolution to the matter.
