At least 14 persons, including a six-month-old infant, were killed and more than 30 others injured, many of them seriously, after a private bus plunged into a 250-metre-deep gorge near Haripurdhar on Friday afternoon. The bus was en route from Shimla to Kupvi.

Panic gripped the area as cries for help echoed from the gorge. Local residents were the first to reach the spot and assisted in rescuing passengers, shifting the injured to nearby hospitals in private vehicles. Police and district administration teams reached the site about half an hour later and launched rescue operations.

The deceased have been identified as Himanshi, Heema, Sanam, Balbir, Vilam, Promila, Surat, Suman, Ramesh, Kiyan, Riyanshi, Mohan and Priyanka. One female victim is yet to be identified. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, though preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control of the vehicle on the narrow hill stretch.

Rescue teams recovered nine bodies from the gorge before 4 pm. Five critically injured passengers, including the infant, later succumbed to their injuries while being referred to higher medical centres, taking the death toll to 14.

After initial treatment at the Community Health Centre, Haripurdhar, the injured were referred to Dr YS Parmar Medical College, Nahan, hospitals in Solan, and IGMC Shimla, highlighting the inadequate healthcare infrastructure in the remote area.

Confirming the incident, Superintendent of Police Nishchint Singh Negi said 14 people had lost their lives. Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan remained at Dr YS Parmar Medical College till late evening to monitor treatment of the injured. BJP MP Suresh Kashyap reviewed rescue operations at the site, while Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Mukesh Agnihotri visited the medical college.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and BJP state president Rajeev Bindal expressed grief over the tragic incident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.
