The administration of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital, Nerchowk, has suspended two MBBS students for allegedly ragging and assaulting a junior student. The complainant has also been penalised after an inquiry found that he attempted to extort money from the seniors by misusing anti-ragging provisions.

According to official sources, the action followed an inquiry conducted by a fact-finding committee constituted by the college administration. The committee examined a complaint filed on December 19, 2025, by Shubham Singh, a second-year MBBS student of the 2024 batch.

In his complaint, Shubham alleged that his seniors — Harsh and Prashant Jha, both fourth-year MBBS students — assaulted him in his hostel room on the college campus on the night of December 18.

Following receipt of the complaint, the college authorities informed the Station House Officer of Balh police station and simultaneously initiated an internal inquiry. The findings were later placed before the college’s anti-ragging committee.

Based on statements of the complainant, the accused students and witnesses, the anti-ragging committee concluded that the two senior students had admitted to assaulting the junior and were guilty of ragging-related misconduct. However, the committee also found that the complainant had acted with mala fide intent.

The inquiry revealed that Shubham Singh had earlier attempted to extort money from the accused students in exchange for settling the matter and had misused provisions of the Anti-Ragging Act for ulterior motives.

It was also reported during the proceedings that both accused seniors were habitual offenders and had faced suspension from the institution in the past.

Confirming the disciplinary action, Principal Dr DK Verma said the college follows a zero-tolerance policy towards indiscipline.

“On the recommendations of the anti-ragging and fact-finding committees, Harsh and Prashant have been suspended from the college for three months. They have also been expelled from the hostel for one year and fined Rs 20,000,” he said.

Dr Verma added that action was also taken against the complainant. “Shubham was found guilty of provoking the seniors and attempting to extort money by misusing the Anti-Ragging Act. He has been expelled from the hostel for six weeks and fined Rs 10,000,” he said.

The college administration reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe and secure academic environment for all students.
