IndiGo cancels 118 flights amid fog, operational issues
IndiGo cancelled 118 flights across its network due to bad weather and operational reasons, with dense fog affecting operations at Delhi and several northern airports during the winter fog window.
IndiGo on Monday cancelled 118 flights across its network due to bad weather and operational reasons, according to information available on the airline’s website.
Of the total cancellations, six flights were cancelled for operational reasons, while the remaining flights were affected by adverse weather conditions, particularly dense fog at several airports.
Flight services were impacted at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Dehradun, Indore, Patna and Bhopal, among other destinations.
In a travel advisory issued at 11.20 am, IndiGo said foggy conditions continued to affect Delhi and several airports in northern India, with visibility yet to fully improve. “As a result, the earlier impact on flight movements is likely to extend into the noon hours, and some delays may continue,” the airline said.
In a separate advisory posted on X, IndiGo assured passengers that flight departures and arrivals were being sequenced to ensure orderly movement, though it did not specify the total number of cancellations for the day.
“We assure you that flight departures and arrivals are being sequenced to ensure steady and orderly movement, while keeping your journey and comfort in mind,” the airline said.
IndiGo has been cancelling a significant number of flights since the onset of the fog season on December 10. Earlier this month, the airline had cancelled thousands of flights, including 1,600 in a single day, following court-mandated stricter flight duty and rest period norms for pilots, leaving lakhs of passengers stranded at airports across the country.
On December 25, IndiGo cancelled 67 flights due to weather-related issues, while another 57 flights were cancelled on Saturday for similar reasons.
The aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has declared the period from December 10 to February 10 as the official winter fog window.
In a passenger advisory issued at 2 pm, Delhi airport said flight operations were running smoothly as runway visibility had improved, though some departures and arrivals could still be impacted. An earlier morning advisory had warned that persistent dense fog had forced operations under CAT III conditions, leading to possible delays.
Under DGCA fog operations (CAT-IIIB) norms, airlines are required to deploy aircraft and pilots certified for low-visibility operations. Category III is an advanced landing system that allows aircraft to operate in dense fog conditions. While CAT III-A permits landings with a runway visual range (RVR) of up to 200 metres, CAT III-B enables operations with an RVR of below 50 metres.
