Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today said that the recent assault incident at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, was a serious warning sign for the state government, reflecting the rapid deterioration of healthcare facilities in Himachal Pradesh.

In a statement issued here, the former Chief Minister said the state’s health system was in shambles, with the general public bearing the direct brunt of administrative failures.

“Hospital chaos, overcrowding, lack of security, excessive workload on doctors and staff, and sheer administrative negligence are leading to such unfortunate incidents,” Thakur said.

He urged the government to learn from the IGMC incident and take concrete corrective steps, instead of indulging in rhetoric. “Health services must be prioritised. Vacant posts should be filled immediately, hospital security strengthened, and uninterrupted supply of medicines and medical equipment ensured,” he said.

Thakur also stressed the need to ensure that the benefits of central government schemes such as Himcare and Ayushman Bharat reach the common people in a transparent and effective manner.

Expressing concern over the worsening situation, he said the government must work with sincerity and accountability to revive the health sector.

“Today, the situation is such that the entire health system in the state has virtually collapsed, and ordinary citizens are paying the price,” he remarked.

He pointed out that the state is facing a severe shortage of medical and paramedical staff, including doctors, nurses, technicians and other healthcare workers.

“There are massive vacancies across categories, but the government is only paying lip service instead of addressing the crisis on the ground,” Thakur alleged.
