Himachal News : BJP to observe Vajpayee’s birth anniversary as Good Governance Day in Himachal
The BJP will mark former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary on December 25 as Good Governance Day, highlighting his role in Himachal Pradesh’s development.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 25 as Good Governance Day, BJP state president Rajeev Bindal said on Saturday. The party will also commemorate Veer Bal Diwas on December 26 and organise the Mann Ki Baat programme on December 28 across the state.
In a statement issued here, Bindal described Vajpayee’s contribution to Himachal Pradesh as “unforgettable, historic and transformative”. He said Vajpayee’s birthday is observed nationwide as Good Governance Day, reflecting his commitment to transparent administration and inclusive development. Bindal urged people to remember the strong developmental foundation laid by the former Prime Minister for the state.
Recalling key initiatives, Bindal said Vajpayee, during his tenure as Prime Minister, announced a special industrial package for Himachal Pradesh on December 1, 2002, which came into force in 2003. He said the package played a crucial role in accelerating industrial growth and generating employment opportunities, benefits that the state continues to reap.
Highlighting infrastructure development, Bindal said the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) fundamentally changed connectivity in Himachal Pradesh. Of the state’s nearly 40,000-km road network, more than 20,000 km were constructed under PMGSY, a scheme initiated by Vajpayee. He added that the programme was further expanded and strengthened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi between 2014 and 2025 to ensure last-mile connectivity in remote and hilly areas.
Bindal also credited Vajpayee’s vision for the Atal Rohtang Tunnel, noting that while Vajpayee laid the foundation stone of the project, it was completed under Prime Minister Modi after facing delays following a change in government. The tunnel, he said, has provided crucial all-weather connectivity to the region and stands as a symbol of Vajpayee’s long-term developmental vision.
