To curb illegal dumping and provide residents with proper waste-disposal options, the Shimla Municipal Corporation is set to develop four new debris dumping sites within city limits. The proposed locations include areas near Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Kamna Devi, Bharari and Chalaunthi. Land for all four sites has already been earmarked.

Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan said construction is expected to begin in early 2026. “Our goal is to start work by the New Year,” he noted. Stage-1 forest clearance has already been granted for the IGMC and Chalaunthi sites.

Chauhan added that he has held meetings with officials to ensure work begins at the earliest and that the sites are completed without delay. He pointed out that illegal dumping often occurs in forests and on roadside slopes because many residents seek to avoid the transportation cost of taking debris to the existing site at Bhariyal village. “To address this, the Municipal Corporation decided to create additional dumping sites within the city,” he said.

He further mentioned that both the MC and the Forest Department have intensified their crackdown on illegal dumping. “The Forest Department and the MC are working jointly to stop this practice. Any vehicle caught dumping illegally will be seized. Strict action will be taken against anyone disposing of debris unlawfully, especially during night hours,” Chauhan stressed.
