Himachal Assembly Sends Section 118 Amendment Bill to Select Committee for Review
The Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha has put the Section 118 Amendment Bill on hold and referred it to a Select Committee for detailed scrutiny. The Bill proposes easing land transfer norms to attract private investment in the state.
The Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on Friday deferred the amendment Bill proposing changes to Section 118 of the Himachal Pradesh Tenancy and Land Reforms Act, 1972.
The House has now referred the Bill to a Select Committee for closer scrutiny.
Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania announced the decision after accepting a request from BJP MLA Randhir Sharma, a move that also received the support of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
He said the Select Committee would include members from both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. “After deliberation, the Select Committee will submit its report to the Vidhan Sabha during the budget session,” the Speaker said.
Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi will constitute the committee and issue the formal notification.
The proposed amendment Bill, introduced by Negi on December 2, seeks to simplify land transfer procedures to attract greater private investment into the state. Currently, Section 118 restricts the transfer of land to non-agriculturists through sale, gift, will, exchange, lease, mortgage with possession, or the creation of tenancy.
