BJP and Congress Unite in Dharamsala to Protest Growing ‘Chitta’ Drug Crisis
In an unusual show of unity, Himachal CM Sukhu and LoP Jai Ram Thakur led a joint protest of Congress and BJP legislators against the rising menace of chitta, calling for a coordinated, non-political fight and unveiling steps for enforcement, awareness and rehabilitation.
In a rare display of bipartisan solidarity, the Congress Legislature Party led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and BJP legislators led by Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur jointly staged a protest on the Himachal Pradesh Assembly premises on Friday, condemning the escalating menace of chitta.
Chief Minister Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and LoP Jai Ram Thakur urged lawmakers to rise above party lines and work together to address the rapidly worsening drug crisis.
“This is not a political issue. Lives are at stake, and we must act collectively,” the Chief Minister said. He added that the government was preparing a comprehensive action plan, which includes convening gram sabha meetings in every panchayat and offering rewards for credible information on drug networks.
Deputy CM Agnihotri noted that anti-drug rallies had already been organised in Shimla and Dharamsala and stressed the need for coordinated action. “I will speak with the Leader of the Opposition right away. We must move together on this,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said that alongside widespread arrests, the government was giving equal importance to rehabilitation. “Properties of offenders are being attached. Enforcement and rehabilitation will go hand in hand,” he added.
