A major fire broke out around 8:00 pm on Thursday at Hotel Dhauladhar, a flagship property of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) in Kangra district, causing extensive damage to the kitchen and nearby sections of the building.

The blaze, which reportedly began in the kitchen, quickly spread to the wooden restaurant and conference hall, escalating the situation.

Firefighters and emergency teams battled the flames for more than two hours before bringing the fire under control.

Officials said quick action by the hotel staff and personnel from the Jal Shakti Department was crucial in containing the blaze and preventing a much larger disaster.

Senior district officials, led by ADM Shilpi Beakta, arrived at the scene promptly to supervise evacuation and containment operations.

A major concern for authorities was ensuring the safe evacuation of government officials who were staying at the hotel for the ongoing Vidhan Sabha session in Dharamsala. All 27 rooms were vacated as a precaution, and no injuries were reported.

Early indications from internal sources suggest the fire may have been triggered by a malfunctioning stove burner, though a formal inquiry is underway. The estimated loss is around ₹1 crore, with significant damage reported in the kitchen, store area, equipment, and adjoining lounge.

Hotel Dhauladhar, located in the heart of Kangra town, is among HPTDC’s key tourism properties. Managing Director Dr. Rajiv Kumar (IAS) said the corporation is committed to restoring and reopening the hotel as soon as possible.
