Spain’s government on Tuesday nominated Teresa Peramato, a leading specialist in gender-based violence law, to serve as the country’s next chief prosecutor. The announcement came just a day after her predecessor resigned following a conviction in a leak investigation.

The Justice Ministry said Peramato, a career prosecutor with 35 years of experience, has earned “broad recognition across the legal profession.” The ministry highlighted her extensive work combating gender-based violence and described her as one of the key figures driving judicial specialization in this field.

Her nomination is expected to face scrutiny from the opposition, which had accused her predecessor—a woman as well—of acting as a political operative.

At 63, Peramato would become the fourth person to hold the post since Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took office in 2018.

The cabinet’s nomination must now be reviewed by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which will issue a non-binding recommendation. After that, Peramato will appear before a confirmation hearing in Spain’s lower house before King Felipe formally appoints her as chief prosecutor.
