To ensure clean and contaminant-free drinking water for residents of the state capital, the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has approved the use of ozone technology in its upcoming bulk water supply project from the Sutlej. This marks the first time the state will use ozone-based disinfection in its water treatment process.

SJPNL’s primary goal is to supply Shimla and nearby areas with pure, high-quality drinking water while also reducing the potential carcinogenic impact associated with chlorination. Ozone water treatment—commonly known as ozonation—involves generating ozone gas on-site and injecting it into the water to disinfect it and remove impurities.

Once infused, ozone rapidly neutralizes bacteria and viruses, while also oxidizing and breaking down organic pollutants, foul odors, and minerals such as iron and manganese.

An SJPNL spokesperson noted that ozone technology is considered an advanced and highly effective treatment method and has delivered positive results in several regions across India. Prior to approval, Tata conducted a detailed study on the technology and recommended its adoption for the Shimla project. “Following the recommendation, the proposal was placed before the Board of Directors for consideration,” the spokesperson added.
