All 23 Crew Members Rescued After Cargo Ship Fire at San Pedro Port; No Injuries Reported
A major fire aboard a vessel at the Port of San Pedro disrupted power and crane operations, but all 23 crew members were safely evacuated, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Over 100 firefighters are working to control the blaze as authorities monitor air quality and hazardous materials.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said on Friday that all crew members were safely evacuated from a burning vessel at the Port of San Pedro, after an explosion triggered by the fire disrupted power and crane operations in the area.
According to LAFD, the remaining crew were assisted off the ship at around 8:27 p.m. (0427 GMT), bringing the total number of evacuees to 23. No injuries were reported. Earlier, six crew members had been unaccounted for.
Hazardous materials were found at multiple locations across the port, prompting firefighters to wear protective gear and use self-contained breathing apparatus during the operation.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a post on X that first responders were on the scene, with more than 100 firefighters working to extinguish the blaze while port police assisted in evacuating the crew.
She added that LAFD was monitoring air quality as firefighting efforts continued. The department also noted that marine units were cooling the exterior of the vessel and that no personnel were being allowed below deck.
