Canada’s Retail Sales Fall 0.7% in September; October Expected to Remain Flat
Canada’s retail sales slipped 0.7% in September to C$69.81 billion, mainly due to weaker motor vehicle and parts sales, according to Statistics Canada. A flash estimate indicates retail sales were essentially unchanged in October. Nine of the retail subsectors posted declines, representing over two-thirds of total sales.
Canada’s retail sales fell 0.7% in September compared with August, dropping to C$69.81 billion ($49.47 billion), Statistics Canada reported on Friday. The decline was driven largely by lower sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers.
In a flash estimate, the agency said retail sales likely showed no change in October.
Sales fell in nine subsectors in September, representing 66.2% of the retail sector. On a volume basis, retail sales were down 0.8%.
