Protesters Break Open Gate No. 1, Enter Panjab University Campus Despite Heavy Police Presence
Hundreds of protesters supporting the “PU Bachao Morcha” broke open Gate No. 1 of Panjab University in Chandigarh, overpowering police barricades and entering the campus. The demonstrators demanded the protection of the university’s autonomy amid growing unrest.
Chandigarh, November 10, 2025 — Tension erupted at Panjab University (PU) on Sunday when protesters associated with the “PU Bachao Morcha” forcefully broke open Gate No. 1 and entered the campus, despite a heavy police presence and extensive barricading.
Large groups of students, youth, and members of various organisations began gathering outside all three university gates early in the morning, responding to the “PU Bachao Morcha” call to defend the university’s autonomy. By afternoon, the crowds had swelled, chanting slogans and holding banners demanding a rollback of what they termed “anti-university decisions.”
Despite the heavy deployment of Chandigarh Police and tight security around the campus, officers were unable to contain the protestors as they surged through the main entrance. Eyewitnesses said that police tried to resist the push but were soon overwhelmed by the number of demonstrators.
The “PU Bachao Morcha,” supported by several student unions and farmer organisations, had earlier urged the public to participate in a mass protest to safeguard the university’s rights and status.
As of late evening, police remained stationed across key points of the campus to prevent further escalation, while student leaders reiterated their demand for dialogue with authorities over policy changes affecting the institution’s autonomy.
