Lavrov Says He’s Willing to Meet Rubio, But Russia’s Interests in Ukraine Must Be Considered
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he is ready to meet his U.S. counterpart Marco Rubio, but emphasized that any peace effort in Ukraine must take into account Russia’s national interests.
The Kremlin on Friday dismissed speculation of a rift between Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin, following reports that efforts to organize a summit between Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump had stalled last month.
According to Reuters and other media outlets, Washington canceled plans for a new summit after Moscow made clear it would not compromise on its demands regarding Ukraine.
The Financial Times, citing a source, reported that Lavrov’s exchanges with Rubio had “disappointed” U.S. officials.
Lavrov told the state-run RIA news agency, “Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and I both understand the need for regular dialogue.”
He added, “It is important to continue discussions on the Ukrainian issue and advance our bilateral agenda. We are in contact by phone and remain open to face-to-face meetings when necessary.”
