At least 18 passengers were killed and three others rescued after a private bus was buried under a massive landslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district on Tuesday evening, officials said. Several others are feared trapped.

The incident occurred in the Bhalughata area of Jhandutta Assembly constituency when the bus, carrying around 30–35 passengers, was traveling from Marotan to Ghumarwin.

Police, Home Guards, and district administration officials rushed to the spot, where an extensive rescue operation is underway. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the debris and extricate those trapped inside the mangled bus.

Jhandutta BJP MLA J. R. Katwal, who is supervising the rescue efforts, told PTI over the phone that 18 bodies have been recovered so far, while three survivors have been taken to a nearby hospital.

A police officer involved in the operation said the “entire hillside collapsed onto the bus,” leaving little chance of survival for those still trapped.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. The Chief Minister said he is in constant touch with district officials and has directed them to accelerate rescue and relief efforts.

An official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said Sukhu has instructed authorities to immediately shift the injured to hospitals and ensure adequate medical care.

Intermittent rainfall has been reported in the region since Monday, which officials said may have contributed to the landslide.
