A sudden shift in weather patterns has brought widespread snowfall, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and a sharp fall in temperatures across northern India.
Himachal Pradesh: Fresh Snowfall, Orange Alert Issued
Fresh snowfall on Monday morning blanketed the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, including Rohtang Pass and the Dhauladhar mountain range, marking the onset of winter. Cold winds swept through mid- and high-altitude areas, sending temperatures plummeting.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for districts such as Shimla, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, hailstorms, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
Traffic movement over Rohtang Pass has been suspended, and Kullu district authorities have urged tourists and residents to avoid non-essential travel.
Punjab and Haryana: Persistent Rainfall Forecast
Several parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh witnessed steady rainfall on Monday, with IMD predicting moderate to heavy rain to continue through Tuesday. Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops from potential hail damage.
Jammu and Kashmir: Heavy Rain Forces School Closures
In Srinagar, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of the city. Following IMD’s weather warning, authorities in the Jammu region ordered the closure of all government and private schools from October 6 to 7.
In Rajouri, intense rainfall triggered landslides that damaged houses and roads, disrupting normal life. Officials are closely monitoring vulnerable areas. The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage has also been suspended from October 5 to 7 due to the adverse weather forecast.
West Bengal: Landslides and Floods Kill 23
In West Bengal, incessant rainfall over the weekend caused severe floods and landslides in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, leaving at least 23 people dead. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with several areas still cut off due to damaged roads.
Delhi-NCR: Rain Brings Relief, Air Quality ‘Moderate’
Delhi and adjoining regions received light to moderate rain on Monday, providing relief from the recent spell of heat and humidity. The maximum temperature dropped from 34.1°C on Sunday to around 29°C.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 117, categorized as “moderate.” Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely to continue through the day, according to IMD.
