In a major decision by the state government, 34 government schools in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district are likely to be shifted from the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Directorate of Education had earlier released an official list of 100 schools for transfer, but the government is now considering adding 15 more, bringing the total to 115.

According to officials, Kangra — the state’s largest district — has the highest number of schools under this plan. While 19 schools were already included in the first list, 15 more have now been shortlisted for government approval. The Directorate has sought detailed records of these schools, and an official notification is expected soon. However, the names of the additional 15 schools have not yet been disclosed.

As part of the plan, all schools shifted to CBSE will adopt a co-educational system, merging separate boys’ and girls’ institutions to conduct joint classes. In areas with larger student populations, one school may function as a high school while the other is upgraded to a senior secondary school.

The state government maintains that the move aims to improve the quality of education. However, the decision has sparked opposition from employees of the HP Board in Dharamshala, who fear potential job losses. Just last week, staff members staged a protest in Dharamshala against the transfer of schools.

Meanwhile, CBSE inspection teams from Delhi are expected to visit the selected schools soon to assess infrastructure and preparedness. Institutions identified for transfer will be required to meet CBSE standards and regulations before their affiliation is finalized, with changes expected to take effect from the next academic session.
