Convictions of drug traffickers and financial investigations are proving to be crucial deterrents in tackling the drug menace.

The Nurpur police campaign against the narcotics mafia gained momentum after two more traffickers were convicted by special courts within a span of just 10 days.

In the first case, the State Waqf Tribunal and Special Judge in Dharamshala sentenced Sukhdev, a resident of Damtal, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh. In March 2018, an Indora police team had intercepted a motorcycle at Ranchi Morh and recovered 8.28 grams of heroin (chitta) and ₹53,200 in cash from Sukhdev. A case was filed against him under the NDPS Act.

In the second case, the Tribunal Court convicted Munish Sharma, a resident of Ward No. 7, Nurpur, sentencing him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh. He was arrested in February 2020 in Nurpur with 5.57 grams of heroin.

On September 18, a Special Judge in Nurpur sentenced Ravi Singh of Bhleta village to two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000.

On the same day, the court convicted Kuldeep alias Kaka of Barota (Indora), sentencing him to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹15,000. A habitual trafficker, Kuldeep also faces multiple NDPS cases, including two registered in 2019 and 2023 at Mukerian and Hajipur police stations in Punjab. — OC
