Despite Damaged Roads, Over 17.3 Million Apple Boxes Reach Himachal Markets

In spite of heavy rains and widespread road damage, Himachal Pradesh has successfully transported more than 17.3 million boxes of apples to markets over the past three months. Alongside ensuring smooth transportation, the state government has also extended benefits to growers under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).
According to official data, between June 27 and September 15, a total of 1,73,74,204 apple boxes (20 kg each) reached different markets. This marks a significant rise compared to the same period last year, when 1,23,18,924 boxes were delivered.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to ensure the restoration of blocked and damaged roads in order to minimize disruption and losses for apple growers. Many damaged routes were either restored or temporarily reconnected through round-the-clock work to guarantee the smooth movement of apples during peak season.
Meanwhile, HPMC’s fruit processing plants at Parala (Shimla), Parwanoo (Solan), and Jarol (Mandi) are running at full capacity, processing nearly 400 tonnes of apples daily. Despite adverse weather, the government has assured farmers of comprehensive support, ensuring they do not miss out on financial benefits.
A government spokesperson reported that 10.98 million boxes were sold through Shimla and Kinnaur APMCs this year, compared to 7.74 million last year. Mandi APMC recorded 1.68 million boxes, while last year it handled 8.91 million. Solan APMC registered sales of 2.49 million boxes, up from 2.21 million last year. In Kullu, sales rose to 2.08 million boxes, compared to 1.40 million in 2024.
Beyond transportation support, the government has facilitated record procurement under the MIS. Through HPMC, purchases have already crossed 55,000 metric tonnes—more than double last year’s volume. To achieve this, HPMC set up 274 collection centers, where procurement is actively underway. However, blocked roads continue to prevent trucks from reaching some areas. The Chief Minister has directed the deployment of additional trucks to ensure timely lifting of apple produce.
“Our government is fully committed to safeguarding the interests and welfare of apple growers,” Sukhu said. “We have introduced universal cartons to guarantee fair prices and eliminate exploitation.”
