A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall caused temporary shelters near the civil hospital to collapse.

In Jawali, Kangra district, a temporary shelter belonging to a migrant family near the old civil hospital building collapsed into a shallow ditch on Tuesday, injuring all four members of the family.

The landslide, caused by intense rainfall, buried the makeshift shelter that the family had built near the hospital premises.

The family — a couple and their two children — were trapped under the debris. Alert hospital staff on night duty, along with local residents, rushed to the site and rescued all four.

According to reports, Sanjay (33) and his wife Radha Devi (25) sustained serious injuries, while their children, Ragini (7) and Anurag (5), suffered minor injuries.

All four were admitted to the Jawali civil hospital for treatment.

The migrant workers had been hired by a contractor for the construction of an additional hospital block. They were residing in three temporary shelters near the existing building — an area prone to landslides and soil erosion. Following the incident, concerns about the structural safety of the hospital premises have intensified.

Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Dr. Irshan Mohammad told The Tribune that as a precaution, the hospital’s indoor ward has been vacated and patients temporarily shifted to the OPD ward.

The injured couple has been referred to the civil hospital in Nurpur for a CT scan, though doctors have confirmed that their condition is stable and out of danger. Authorities, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and senior officials, have been informed of the incident.

Meanwhile, Block Medical Officer Aman Dua stated that the department was already aware of the high-risk location. He added that funds of ₹14 lakh had been deposited with the Public Works Department several months ago to construct protective structures and a retaining wall.

Work is expected to begin once the monsoon season ends.
