Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist, commentator, and ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event at the University of Utah on Wednesday. Leaders across the political spectrum have expressed deep condolences following the tragedy.

Some of the key reactions are as follows:

Donald Trump, U.S. President
“A great, and even greater, soul—Charlie Kirk—is gone. No one understood the hearts of America’s youth better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by all, especially by me. Now, he is no longer with us. Melania and I send our deepest condolences to his beautiful wife, Erika, and the entire family. Charlie, we love you!”

J.D. Vance, U.S. Vice President
“Oh Lord, grant him eternal peace.”

Joe Biden, former U.S. President, Democrat
“There is no place for this kind of violence in our country. It must end—now. Jill and I are praying for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones.”

Barack Obama, former U.S. President, Democrat
“We still do not know the motive of the person who shot Charlie Kirk, but there is no place for such hateful violence in our democracy.”

Brook Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture
“My dearest friend and fellow fighter for Christ and America, Charlie Kirk’s death is a profound tragedy. While the loss is centered on him and his beloved family, there is no doubt this is also a tragedy for America, no matter one’s political beliefs. To abandon the politics of reason and persuasion—the very work of Charlie’s life—for the false politics of violence and murder is to abandon America itself.”

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel
“Charlie Kirk was targeted for speaking the truth and defending freedom. He was a brave friend of Israel, a fighter against falsehood, and a steadfast supporter of Judeo-Christian civilization. I spoke with him just two weeks ago and invited him to visit Israel. Sadly, that meeting will never happen. We have lost an extraordinary man. His immense pride in America and unwavering belief in freedom of expression will leave an enduring legacy.”

Yvette Cooper, U.K. Foreign Secretary
“I am deeply shocked by the killing of Charlie Kirk in Utah. Political violence has no place in our society. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.”

Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, Republican
“Charlie’s voice was a beacon for millions of young Americans searching for truth, courage, and conviction. There is no place in America for this senseless act of violence.”

Donald Trump Jr.
“Brother, I love you so much. You gave so many people the courage to speak up, and we will never be silent.”

Ronna McDaniel, Chair of the Republican National Committee
“Charlie Kirk was a father, husband, and dedicated patriot who spent his life defending conservative values and inspiring young Americans. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, loved ones, and countless supporters across the country. The horrific violence that claimed Charlie’s life at Utah Valley University is a nightmare. Both Republicans and Democrats must unite in condemning this brutality, which has no place in America.”

Senator Mike Lee, Utah, Republican
“This murder was a cowardly act of violence—an attack on freedom’s heroes like Charlie, on students gathered for civic debate, and on all Americans peacefully working to save our country. Terrorists will not win. Charlie will.”

Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy
“The shocking news of the assassination of young and popular conservative activist Charlie Kirk is devastating. It is a heinous murder and a deep wound for all who believe in democracy and freedom. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and the American conservative community.”

Geert Wilders, Dutch right-wing leader
“Charlie Kirk was absolutely right. In honor of him and his courage, I echo his words that are relevant for Europe as well: Islam is the sword with which the Left is trying to cut the throat of Europe. Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk. Condolences to his family and America.”

French Ministry of Foreign Affairs
“France expresses its deepest condolences on the killing of Charlie Kirk. France categorically rejects all forms of political violence and reiterates its commitment to peaceful dialogue, which is the foundation of any democracy.”

Marine Le Pen, French right-wing leader
“The murder of a young father solely because of his political commitment, in a world increasingly marked by unchecked violence against politicians, is horrifying. What is perhaps most cruel and disturbing is that some on French television are justifying such political killings.”

Andrzej Duda, President of Poland
“Any act of aggression must be condemned. But the murder of a young man, husband, and father over political differences provokes the strongest outrage and weakens the very foundations of democracy. Charlie Kirk courageously defended the values cherished by our nations. His message now resonates even more powerfully. I join in prayer with the bereaved family and all Americans during this tragic time.”
