Gopal Kapoor, an engineer who gained popularity in Himachal Pradesh for his controversial forecasts, has once again expressed concern, this time about a possible “blunder in money-making.”His statement has triggered a renewed debate in the hill state: should such forecasts be dismissed as superstition, or should the administration at least consult him in light of Himachal’s mounting disasters?

The Central Conflict: Science vs. Spirituality

At the heart of the discussion lies a clash between two worldviews:

  • Scientific Explanation:

Deforestation, uncontrolled development, climate change, and weak geology are all factors that experts attribute to Himachal’s frequent landslides, cloudbursts, and floods. While hydrologists and geologists caution against careless building and digging in the Himalayas, meteorologists examine changing patterns of rainfall.

  • Spiritual Explanation:

According to Kapoor and many residents, the state’s problems are the result of divine retribution. Using the story of Shiva and the Jalandhar deities as support, Kapoor recently claimed that modern intrusions, such as heavy trucking, trekking, and the proposed Bijli Mahadev ropeway project, have disrupted Himachal’s sacred geography, especially the seven seats of Shiva, with Bijli Mahadev at its center.

Unusual Monsoon Pattern

Adding weight to the debate, this year the monsoon stream unexpectedly crossed Himachal and entered Tibet — a rare climatic event. While scientists analyze this as part of global climate shifts, Kapoor interprets it as a divine signal that balance in the “land of the gods” has been broken.

Bijli Mahadev Ropeway Controversy

Protests have been sparked over the ₹284 crore Bijli Mahadev ropeway project. Temple officials claim that local deities have opposed the project, which involves the cutting down of more than 200 trees and is expected to transport 36,000 passengers daily. Locals contend that these projects disregard traditional customs and natural boundaries.

Adding a spiritual dimension, Kapoor asserts that the ropeway forces nature—or divinity—to react by striking at the very center of Himachal’s holy power. Notably, many people interpreted this year’s unusually shuttered Bijli Mahadev temple doors during the rain as symbolic.

Calls for Government Action

Kapoor supporters are directly challenging the administration:

  • Shouldn’t the government at least listen to him if his predictions sometimes come true?
  • Is it ego, not policy, why the state is refusing to consult him?

Critics, however, warn that giving official weight to spiritual predictions could weaken the role of scientific disaster management.

A Dual Lens on Himachal’s Future

The challenge before Himachal is not only natural but interpretive:

  • Geological surveys, environmental research, and data are provided by science to explain and prevent disasters.
  • Spiritual belief frames disasters as consequences of ignoring sacred laws and disturbing divine sites.

Both viewpoints agree on one thing: Himachal Pradesh is becoming more vulnerable. The effects are getting worse, regardless of whether climate science or divine wrath is to blame.

Conclusion

Kapoor’s latest prediction about a “blunder in money-making” has unsettled many, not just for its content but for what it represents — a society torn between science and spirituality. For a state that sees itself as Devbhoomi, the government’s challenge is balancing scientific evidence with public faith.

What remains clear is that disasters in Himachal cannot be understood — or addressed — through one lens alone. A comprehensive approach must consider both the material causes and the cultural interpretations shaping how communities experience and respond to crisis.
