DIG Cyber Crime Mohit Chawla Deputed to ITBP on Central Assignment

Dynamic and accomplished IPS officer Mohit Chawla, currently serving as DIG Cyber Crime with the Himachal Pradesh Police, has been deputed to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued formal orders in this regard. During his tenure in Himachal, Chawla made significant contributions to strengthening cybercrime investigation and control.

Born in the Akhara region of Kullu district, Chawla later grew up in Ambala, Haryana. A 2010-batch IPS officer of the Himachal cadre, he stands among the rare officers who have excelled both academically and professionally. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and a Master’s in Economics from Panjab University, and has cleared prestigious national-level examinations including UGC-NET and JRF.

Even while in service, Chawla continued his pursuit of education. Recently, he completed a Master’s in Cyber Law (IGNOU), a Postgraduate Certificate in Human Resource Management (IIM Ahmedabad), specialized training in Research Methodology (IIT Madras), and a Postgraduate Certification (IIT Guwahati). In recognition of his contributions to public service and social work, IEC University conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate (PhD).

As DIG Cyber Crime, Chawla’s leadership transformed the department’s performance. When he assumed charge, the recovery rate in cybercrime cases stood at just 3 percent. Through focused strategy, team-building, and technical innovation, he raised the recovery rate to 28 percent—a milestone regarded as exemplary not only in Himachal but across India.

Over the years, Chawla has served in key positions including ASP Kangra, SP Mandi, SP Vigilance Shimla, Commandant, 3rd IRB Pandoh, SP Solan, ADC Raj Bhavan, SP Shimla, and SSP Baddi. His work ethic, public connect, and distinctive style of functioning have consistently drawn appreciation. Known for his sharp decision-making and approachable personality, he has left an indelible mark in every posting.

Chawla’s service has been recognized through numerous awards and honors. He received the Pratibha Samman (2013) from the Haryana government, the DGP Disc (2015) as SP Mandi, and the ADC Title of Honour (2019) from the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. He has also been awarded three Governor’s Commendations, the GOC-in-C Army Commendation Medal, and a second DGP Disc (2021) for his work as SP Shimla. In 2020, Fame India (Asia Post Survey) ranked him among the Top 50 most popular and admired police captains in the country.

Before joining the Indian Police Service, Chawla gained diverse professional experience across both government and private sectors, having worked as a teacher, researcher, manager, and assistant in institutions such as the Postal Department, Bank of Baroda, and Bank of India. This varied background has enriched his career and contributed to his ability to excel in every role.

With his deputation to the ITBP, Mohit Chawla carries forward a career defined by dedication, intellect, and public service—setting a high benchmark for young officers in the Indian Police Service.
