At least three houses collapsed and several others developed cracks after a major portion of land caved in at the Scheduled Caste settlement in Chabutra village, Sujanpur constituency, on Sunday evening. The incident left nearly 100 people homeless.

Frightened residents rushed out of their homes and gathered along the roadside for safety. Later, the displaced families were provided shelter in the local school building, while some were accommodated at a satsang hall in the nearby village of Badbadar.

Officials said continuous rainfall had loosened the soil above a rocky plateau, triggering the subsidence.

Joginder Singh, a local resident, recalled, “As soon as the ground started sinking, villagers ran towards the market. Within minutes, a few houses collapsed and cracks appeared in several others. With the rain showing no signs of stopping, the situation is only getting worse.”

In the immediate aftermath, villagers arranged food and essential supplies for the affected families and informed the authorities.

Deputy Commissioner Amarjeet Singh said the administration is extending all possible assistance.
“People have been moved to safe locations and given shelter in government buildings. Teams from the disaster response force, police, and the administration are on the ground to support those affected,” he said.

The DC, who visited the site personally, assured that every effort is being made to provide relief and assistance to all displaced men, women, and children.
