Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid, preparing to enter the final season of his current deal, says he won’t rush into negotiations on a contract extension.

“As I said back in June, my plan was to take my time with this, and I still feel the same way,” McDavid told reporters Wednesday. “I’ll take the time I need and think everything through.”

The 28-year-old forward spoke during Team Canada’s Olympic orientation camp in Calgary. It was his first public comment since the Oilers’ loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final—a second straight defeat in the championship series.

McDavid emphasized that his focus remains on delivering Edmonton its first Stanley Cup since 1990.
“My intention is to win in Edmonton. After winning gold with Canada, that’s probably the only goal I still have,” he said. “I’ll take time to talk it over with my family, my agent, and everyone involved.”

McDavid is entering the last season of the eight-year, $100 million contract he signed in July 2017. His next deal is expected to place him among the highest-paid players in NHL history.

Currently, his contract carries an average annual value of $12.5 million, ranking fourth in the league behind teammate Leon Draisaitl ($14 million), Toronto’s Auston Matthews ($13.25 million), and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon ($12.6 million).

McDavid posted 100 points (26 goals, 74 assists) in 67 games during the 2024–25 season and added 33 points (seven goals, 26 assists) in 22 playoff appearances.

Since being drafted first overall by Edmonton in 2015, the three-time Hart Trophy winner has tallied 1,082 points (361 goals, 721 assists) in 712 career games.
