Amid a destructive monsoon that left nearly every road and hillside in Dharamshala scarred by landslides, the community has held fast to its traditions. Hopes rested on the outcome of a mythical battle between Indrunag and the witches said to disrupt the balance of the skies.

Before any major event in Dharamshala — from local festivals to international cricket matches — devotees make it a point to seek blessings at the Indrunag Temple in Khaniyara. Yesterday, following the symbolic return of the deity to the temple, the city awoke today to clear skies and sunlight. Through the temple oracle (Gaur), Indrunag foretold a season of good harvests, peace, and respite from the devastation caused by heavy rains.

The temple marked the occasion with special rituals, accompanied by the music of ancient instruments and traditional games. The oracle recounted how Indrunag, joined by his brothers Toral Nag and Budu Nag, fought off the witches who once held sway, even sustaining a spear wound in the mythical battle.

Vipin Nag, priest of the Indrunag Temple, told that, according to tradition, sandalwood paste and butter are now being applied to the deity’s symbolic wound — a ritual that will continue for five days.

In Himachal Pradesh — often called Devbhoomi, the land of the gods — customs and faith remain deeply woven into everyday life. After this season’s fury of landslides and floods, many locals believe the turmoil reflects the consequences of violating sacred ground.
