Shimla, August 10:
The State Government has approved the establishment of new milk processing plants in Nahan, Nalagarh, Mohal and Rohru, along with a milk chilling centre at Jalari in Hamirpur district and a bulk milk cooler at Jhaleda in Una district. This initiative aims to modernise the state’s milk and dairy processing infrastructure.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said this move will not only boost farmers’ income but also strengthen the rural economy. He noted that over 90 percent of the state’s population lives in rural areas, largely dependent—fully or partially—on agriculture and animal husbandry. The development of the dairy sector remains a top priority for the State Government. With these new plants, milk procurement will increase, farmers will get fair prices, and quality standards in milk procurement will be further enhanced.

To improve efficiency and ensure transparency, the Himachal Pradesh Milk Federation (Milkfed) will soon introduce an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Through this digital platform, farmers will be able to access essential information directly on their mobile phones, including real-time updates on milk procurement, payment status, quality test results, and purchase prices. All transactions under the ERP system will be digital, minimising the possibility of human error. Farmers will receive instant mobile notifications on milk sales and payments, and digital data availability will speed up bill generation, enabling direct transfers to farmers’ bank accounts.

The Chief Minister stated that due to the State Government’s efforts, milk procurement by Milkfed has reached record levels, with improved quality of collection. Construction of an ultra-modern milk processing plant is underway in Dhaulagwar, Kangra district, which will produce curd, lassi, butter, ghee, paneer, flavoured milk, khoya, and mozzarella cheese once operational. This will ensure fair prices for farmers and others involved in the dairy sector.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving rural livelihoods through continued investment in the animal husbandry and dairy sectors. Himachal Pradesh has also become the first state in the country to provide a Minimum Support Price for milk procurement—buying cow’s milk at ₹51 per litre and buffalo’s milk at ₹61 per litre. Additionally, farmers and cooperative societies that transport milk over two kilometres to designated collection centres are given a transportation subsidy of ₹2 per litre.
