Mandi, August 10 – Traveling on the Chandigarh–Manali National Highway is becoming increasingly hazardous by the day. The highway has been severely damaged at several points, with many stretches turning into danger zones. The latest incident has emerged at Dayod, near Pandoh Dam, where a section of the road has sunk by 4 to 6 feet due to land subsidence.
With assistance from the Public Works Department, the sunken portion has been temporarily restored by filling it with stones and soil. However, the ground continues to sink. Police personnel from the Pandoh outpost are on site, working continuously to fill the affected section and keep traffic moving.
The situation is further complicated by the absence of any alternative route, forcing heavy vehicles to pass through the damaged stretch. In-charge of Pandoh Police Post, Anil Katoch, said that vehicles are being allowed through under police supervision. Whenever the highway sinks further, officers themselves place stones and debris to make the road passable.
It’s not just the highway that’s sinking—several parts of the hillside are collapsing, posing a threat to many homes. Among the affected residents is Koyla Devi, who has been forced to move with her husband and two children into a temporary shelter set up by the company constructing the four-lane project.
She said their cowshed, which houses two cows, is also at risk. The family has been living in fear for over a month. A culvert above their house broke long ago and has not yet been repaired, causing water to flow in a new direction and increasing the danger to their home. The highway section above the house has collapsed, and the road’s safety railing has slid down near their property.
Koyla Devi said that a patwari has inspected the site and sent a report to higher authorities. She has urged the administration to take immediate and effective measures to address the threat and provide her family with all possible assistance.
