Mandi: Chandigarh-Manali NH closed for over 36 hours, likely to reopen by afternoon
Mandi, August 7
The Chandigarh-Manali National Highway has remained closed for the past 36 hours due to a massive landslide near Dawada around 10 PM on Tuesday night. NHAI machinery has been continuously working to clear the debris, but frequent rockfalls from the hillside throughout Wednesday have posed serious challenges to the restoration efforts.
Small vehicles stranded near the Jhaloni tunnel have been diverted towards Mandi via Katoula. However, several large vehicles are still stuck in the area. The NHAI and local administration are providing food and basic necessities to those stranded.
A fuel tanker also got caught in the landslide near Dawada. Fortunately, the driver is safe, although falling rocks have damaged the vehicle and caused petrol to spill on the road.
Meanwhile, debris from another landslide near Jogni Mod has been cleared, allowing vehicles stuck between Dawada and Jogni Mod to be rerouted toward Pandoh. The Dawada flyover has also suffered significant damage due to large boulders falling from the hillside. As a precaution, vehicle movement over the flyover has been temporarily suspended. NHAI has confirmed that traffic will resume only after necessary repairs are completed.
