Landslide Tragedy in Chamba: Newlywed Couple Died as House Collapses
The site of the landslide
Chamba, July 21:
The relentless downpour in Himachal Pradesh has once again turned into a tragedy for a family. In a heartbreaking incident early Sunday morning, a newly married couple lost their lives in a landslide in Suta village, under the Chadi Gram Panchayat of Chamba district’s Mehla sub-division.
Between 3 and 4 AM, a massive rockslide triggered by heavy rainfall came crashing down from the hillside, completely demolishing the house where the young couple was asleep. The sheer force of the falling boulders and water left nothing but debris in its wake.
The victims have been identified as Pallavi and her husband Sunny, who died on the spot. Pallavi had returned to her parental home just five days ago, and Sunny had arrived on Monday to bring her back. No one could have imagined that this would be their final reunion.
The couple had been married only five months ago in a joyous celebration that had brought new happiness into their families. Their arrival had filled the home with laughter and light—but one night of rain shattered everything. The entire village has been left grief-stricken by the tragedy. The house, owned by Sanju (Pallavi’s father), was completely flattened and buried under mud and rubble.
According to reports, the couple was asleep when disaster struck. Torrential rain was pouring outside, when suddenly a loud rumble signaled the collapse—rocks and water from the hill slammed into the house. By the time the villagers saw the scene in the morning, it was already too late. Tearful eyes and stunned silence filled the air.
Local police and administration teams reached the site immediately upon receiving the report. The bodies were retrieved from the debris and sent for post-mortem. Authorities have assured the family of all possible support and assistance.
The tragedy has shaken the entire village. What was once a home full of celebration and warmth is now marked by silence and sorrow. Residents have urged the administration to declare the area disaster-prone and take necessary preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
