Shimla, July 12 – Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off the 20-member Indian contingent heading to Japan for the prestigious Shitokai Goju-Ryu Karate Championship, set to be held in Osaka from July 15 to 23, 2025. The team was seen off from the Chief Minister’s official residence, Oak Over.

Wishing the athletes the very best, CM Sukhu said it was a moment of pride for the entire country to see Indian players representing the nation on such a prestigious international platform. He praised their dedication and expressed hope for their success and strong performance in the tournament.

The Chief Minister emphasized the state government’s commitment to promoting sports and nurturing sporting talent. He highlighted several initiatives undertaken in this regard, including a significant increase in cash awards for medal-winning athletes to inspire them to aim higher.

He shared that the prize money for Olympic, Paralympic, and Winter Olympic medalists has been raised from ₹3 crore to ₹5 crore for gold, ₹2 crore to ₹3 crore for silver, and ₹1 crore to ₹2 crore for bronze. Similarly, for Asian and Para Asian Games, the reward has been hiked to ₹4 crore for gold, ₹2.5 crore for silver, and ₹1.5 crore for bronze, from the earlier ₹50 lakh, ₹30 lakh, and ₹20 lakh respectively.

CM Sukhu urged the youth to embrace sports and discipline in their lives, emphasizing that channeling youthful energy in the right direction is key to steering them away from social evils like drug abuse.

The 20-member karate team includes 11 players from Roots Country School, Baghi in Shimla district, while the remaining athletes hail from various parts of Himachal and across the country. Notably, this is India’s return to the championship after a five-year gap.

The team is led by Head Coach Sensei Anil Kumar Zishta and Assistant Coach Sensei Hari Tamang, who will accompany the players to Japan. Roots Country School founder Sunil Rohta was also present on the occasion.
