Shimla, July 8:
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed a scientific investigation into a rapidly spreading and unexplained disease affecting apple orchards in Himachal Pradesh. The directive came after a delegation of apple growers met the Chief Minister and expressed serious concern over widespread crop damage due to the mysterious ailment.
The growers informed the Chief Minister that the disease is causing apple leaves to turn yellow and fall prematurely, leading to a sharp decline in yield. They urged the government to act swiftly and conduct a thorough scientific study to identify and control the disease.
Taking prompt cognizance of the issue, the Chief Minister immediately contacted the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (Solan), and instructed the university to dispatch expert teams to the affected regions without delay. He emphasized the need for an in-depth scientific analysis and directed that farmers be educated on prevention and control measures at the grassroots level.
Expressing concern over the potential economic impact on growers, the Chief Minister said the situation must be addressed urgently. He instructed the university to submit a comprehensive report to the state government within seven days, so that timely and appropriate steps can be taken.
CM Sukhu reassured the delegation that the state government is fully committed to resolving the issues faced by farmers and fruit growers on a priority basis and will extend all necessary support. He emphasized that apple cultivation is a backbone of Himachal Pradesh’s economy and a primary source of livelihood for thousands of families.
Naresh Chauhan, Principal Advisor (Media) to the Chief Minister, was also present during the meeting.
