Former Congress MLA Bumber Thakur Booked for Allegedly Pushing On-Duty ASP During VIP Event
Bilaspur, July 3:
A case has been registered against former Congress MLA Bumber Thakur at the Sadar police station under various sections, including charges of disrupting official duties and creating a ruckus during a VVIP movement. The FIR stems from an incident on Wednesday outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where Thakur allegedly pushed and used abusive language against an on-duty Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP).
The situation unfolded shortly before BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda was scheduled to arrive at the Circuit House in Bilaspur. In protest over the non-arrest of a person accused of attacking him during a previous march, Thakur had announced plans to stage a sit-in.
Despite attempts by the administration and police to stop him near his wife’s official residence in Changar, Thakur and his supporters reached the main gate of the DC office. At that time, Nadda’s convoy was expected to pass through the area. SDM Sadar and the DSP requested Thakur to use the main gate for entry, but he insisted on taking a different route.
Tensions escalated when ASP Shiv Chaudhary, who was handling duties as Acting SP, intervened and a scuffle reportedly broke out between him and Thakur. The situation was eventually diffused with the intervention of the SDM. As a precaution, Nadda’s convoy was rerouted via the bus stand road instead of Court Road to reach the Circuit House safely.
ASP Chaudhary stated that Thakur had neither informed the administration about his protest nor sought prior permission. “Maintaining law and order during a VVIP movement is the police’s duty. Given that Nadda is a Z-category protectee, no compromise on security was acceptable,” he said.
In his defense, Bumber Thakur claimed that there was an attempt to attack him on Tuesday night, and despite lodging a complaint, no FIR was registered. He added that had he known Nadda’s convoy was to pass through the same route, he would have shifted his protest elsewhere.
