Massive Landslide in Shimla’s Dhalli: Retaining Wall Collapses, Five Homes at Risk

A major disaster was narrowly averted on Thursday in Shimla’s Dhalli area when a massive retaining wall constructed along the four-lane highway project at Lindidhar village suddenly collapsed. The incident triggered panic among villagers, as the landslide buried hundreds of apple trees and placed five nearby houses in immediate danger.
According to local residents, cracks had been appearing in the wall for several days, and repeated complaints were made to the concerned department and construction company. However, no preventive action was taken in time. When the wall finally gave way, villagers managed to evacuate their homes just in time, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.
Villagers present at the site said that the construction of the four-lane highway has led to gradual land subsidence in Lindidhar. They alleged that concerns over the wall’s structural quality had been raised earlier, but were ignored. The current situation has forced five families to abandon their homes and seek shelter elsewhere for safety.
The collapse also caused extensive damage to orchards in the area, with hundreds of apple trees buried under the debris — a significant loss for local farmers. Affected villagers have urged the administration to conduct an immediate geotechnical survey and initiate relief and rehabilitation measures.
Police and district administration officials have reached the site and are assessing the damage. Authorities have declared the affected area unsafe and advised residents to stay away until further notice.
