Shimla, July 2:
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday conducted an aerial survey of the disaster-affected Thunag and Janjehli regions in Mandi district and personally distributed relief supplies to the affected residents. He arrived at the Rain Galu helipad in Thunag via an Army helicopter from Sarkaghat, where he interacted with locals, listened to their concerns, and assured them of full support from the government.

The Chief Minister’s flight narrowly avoided weather-related delays—had take-off at Rain Galu been delayed by even five minutes, deteriorating conditions would have made it impossible to return, leaving him stranded. He had received reports that road access to Thunag had been completely cut off and food supplies were exhausted. Acting swiftly, he directed district officials to deliver relief by air.

Due to recent cloudburst events, road networks in Thunag and Janjehli subdivisions have been entirely disrupted, making aerial delivery of aid the only viable option. The district administration prepared 1,000 relief kits containing essentials such as flour, rice, pulses, oil, and salt. Of these, 172 kits were distributed on Wednesday—90 at Rain Galu and 82 in Janjehli.

To restore communication in the cut-off Thunag region, a VSAT satellite communication system was airlifted along with police personnel to help re-establish contact with remote areas.

The local administration has also set up relief camps, including one at the Government Primary School in Thunag, which is currently sheltering more than 200 displaced people. Food, medicines, and other essentials are being provided at the site.

Earlier in the day, CM Sukhu departed Nadaun at 9 a.m. and travelled by road to Dharampur in Mandi district to inspect disaster-affected areas and meet with victims. He then visited rain-hit regions of Sarkaghat, assuring residents of all necessary assistance.
