Shimla, June 21:
On the occasion of the 11th International Yoga Day, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla joined students and staff at Raj Bhavan, Shimla, in a collective yoga session, promoting greater awareness about the benefits of yoga. Addressing the gathering, the Governor urged everyone to make yoga an integral part of their daily lives, emphasizing that yoga is not merely a form of exercise but a powerful practice that brings harmony to body, mind, and soul.
The Governor described yoga as a precious gift of India’s ancient rishi tradition, now embraced across the globe. He recalled that the sages of old developed yoga to ensure physical well-being and mental discipline. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s persistent efforts in securing global recognition for yoga, with June 21 now observed worldwide as International Yoga Day, officially endorsed by the United Nations.
Highlighting the growing stress and imbalance in modern lifestyles, the Governor said yoga offers a much-needed sense of equilibrium. He noted that Himachal Pradesh, known as the land of the gods, is also a land rich in spiritual heritage, culture, and natural beauty. He made a special appeal to the people of Himachal to adopt yoga in their daily lives as a means of staying away from societal ills like substance abuse and to set a positive example for others.
Drawing inspiration from Indian mythology, the Governor remarked that just as Goddess Parvati attained Lord Shiva through intense yogic discipline, people in Himachal too should embrace yoga to lead disciplined, healthy lives. He added that tourists visiting from other states and countries should carry back with them the message of a clean, healthy, and drug-free Himachal.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Raj Bhavan officials, staff, and students, who all took part in the group yoga session with great energy and spirit.
