Shimla | June 3:
In the wake of the devastating natural disasters that struck Himachal Pradesh in 2023, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) have stepped up their preparedness well ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. As part of their proactive approach, an awareness drive was launched to educate the public on disaster prevention and safety measures.

An equipment exhibition was organized outside the Shimla Secretariat, where the NDRF showcased a range of specialized tools and equipment used during rescue operations. Visitors were briefed on safety protocols and rescue techniques to be followed during landslides, floods, and other monsoon-related disasters.

Officials emphasized that unplanned and unscientific construction in the hills significantly contributes to the scale of destruction during such events. The NDRF also expressed concern over ongoing construction in landslide-prone areas, urging stricter adherence to safety norms.

A statewide mega mock drill has been scheduled for June 6, aimed at assessing and enhancing the preparedness of agencies and communities to respond to natural calamities. Ahead of this drill, the exhibition served as a hands-on awareness platform for government staff and the general public.

Speaking at the event, Inspector Danny K. Atwal of the NDRF said the force is fully prepared to deal with the challenges of the rainy season. “We’ve used today’s exhibition as an opportunity to educate Secretariat staff and local residents on precautionary measures during emergencies. Our teams are ready and equipped to respond swiftly,” he added.
