Mandi, May 27: Tension erupted at the Takoli Toll Plaza on the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane highway late Sunday evening when a heated dispute between a group of Punjab-based youths and local residents over toll charges escalated into a violent clash. The situation spiraled out of control as swords were reportedly brandished during the altercation, leaving one local youth seriously injured.
According to police reports, around 8:30 PM, four young men from Jalandhar, travelling in a luxury SUV (Thar) on their way back from Manali, reached the Takoli Toll Plaza and allegedly refused to pay the toll fee. This led to an argument with toll staff, which soon turned physical. Eyewitnesses claim the men pulled out swords and began threatening and swinging them.
During the scuffle, a local resident, Vipin Kumar, sustained serious injuries, particularly to his head and eye. Witnesses also alleged that the accused tried to flee the scene by driving their vehicle recklessly into the crowd, triggering panic at the plaza.
Local Panchayat Pradhan Sunder Thakur immediately alerted the police at Aut Police Station. SHO Karn Singh reached the scene with his team and brought the situation under control. The four Punjab-based individuals were taken into custody and sent for medical examination.
Based on complaints from both sides, the police have filed cross-FIRs and launched a detailed investigation. Authorities are also probing the origin of the weapons and whether the assault was premeditated.
The incident has sparked anger among local residents, who are demanding strict legal action against the accused. Police have assured a fair investigation and said that all necessary legal steps will be taken against those found guilty.
