Shimla, May 12: Himachal Pradesh is rapidly opening new doors of opportunity in the field of information technology. With demand for a skilled IT workforce rising across the country, the state government under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is taking proactive steps to position Himachal as a significant contributor to India’s digital future.

In a bold push to encourage innovation, the state is working toward building a comprehensive drone ecosystem. Recognizing the pivotal role of drone technology in sectors like agriculture, disaster management, and healthcare, the government sees it as a critical component in achieving its “Green Himachal” vision.

As part of this vision, the government is preparing to roll out drone taxi services within this financial year. These services will improve connectivity to remote areas, enabling efficient delivery of agricultural produce, medicines, and essential supplies. Drone stations are also planned in the districts of Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra to support modernization in agriculture and horticulture.

The government’s strategy focuses heavily on skill development and self-employment. In the 2024–25 fiscal year, 243 youth received drone technology training through government-run industrial training institutes. New-age academic courses are also being introduced across the state to equip students with future-ready skills.

Approved initiatives include:

  • A new college for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Rajiv Gandhi Government Engineering College in Nagrota Bagwan, Kangra.

  • A Civil Engineering degree program at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Institute of Engineering and Technology in Pragatinagar, Shimla.

  • A diploma course in Computer Science & Engineering (AI & Machine Learning) at Government Polytechnic Sundernagar in Mandi.

These courses will be supported with qualified staff to ensure quality education.

Recognizing the immense potential in AI and Data Science, the state is also taking steps to boost youth employability and entrepreneurship. A ₹2 crore Innovation Fund is being established to help young innovators bring their ideas to life.

Additionally, a Digital University of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Skill and Vocational Studies is set to be established in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur on a public-private partnership and self-financing model. This institution will nurture entrepreneurial and technical skills among students.

With these forward-looking initiatives, the Himachal Pradesh government is opening up new avenues for youth empowerment, innovation, and self-reliance in the digital economy. The state is well on its way to becoming a prominent IT hub in the country.
