Solan, May 10: A serious accident was narrowly avoided near Shamlech on National Highway-5 (NH-5) when a Haryana-registered car traveling from Sonipat to Shimla veered into an open roadside pit. The car, carrying four passengers, suffered significant damage, though the occupants escaped with minor injuries.
The incident once again highlights the persistent safety hazards along this busy highway. Locals say the accident could have been prevented if the roadside pit had been properly covered in time.
Just a day earlier, another case of alleged negligence by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) came to light when two cars collided near Baruri, causing heavy damage to both vehicles. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in that case either.
Residents and commuters have voiced growing concerns over the increasing number of such incidents on NH-5, attributing them to poor maintenance and carelessness by road construction agencies. They are now calling for immediate and decisive action by the concerned authorities to ensure road safety.
