Shimla, April 13:
A serious lapse in the healthcare supply chain has emerged in Mandi district, where a misbranded medicine was discovered at the Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supply Corporation Limited’s pharmacy inside Sundernagar Civil Hospital. The incident has sparked panic and raised troubling questions about patient safety in government-run facilities.
Acting on a complaint received from a pharmaceutical company and the police, Drug Inspector Reena Chauhan, along with a local police team, conducted a late-night raid at the pharmacy. During the inspection, a strip of allegedly counterfeit painkiller was seized directly from the sales counter.
“The company claims that fake versions of their medicine are being sold at this government shop,” said Drug Inspector Reena Chauhan. “We have recovered the mentioned strip and demanded supply records from the shop owner. Further investigation is underway.”
Major Red Flags in Health System
Authorities are now probing several key questions:
-
How did a counterfeit drug enter the government medicine supply chain?
-
Since when has it been sold at this location?
-
Was it administered to patients in the hospital?
The possibility of patients receiving misbranded medicine has triggered concern among locals and medical professionals alike. The shop, being located inside a civil hospital and run under a state government enterprise, was expected to uphold the highest standards of quality and safety.
Investigation and Accountability Underway
A full-fledged investigation has been launched to determine the source of the counterfeit medicine, the extent of its circulation, and accountability within the supply chain. The Health Department and district administration are now under scrutiny for the oversight failure.
Citizens and patient rights groups have demanded strict action against those responsible and systemic reforms to prevent such dangerous incidents in the future.
As of now, no health complications linked to the seized medicine have been reported. However, the incident has cast a shadow over the credibility of drug distribution within public hospitals in Himachal Pradesh.
More details are awaited as the investigation progresses, and the state’s health system braces for potential reforms in its supply oversight.
