Shimla, April 7:
In a significant move to support farmers and promote sustainable agriculture, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has officially launched the registration form for the purchase of turmeric grown through natural farming methods. This initiative is part of the state’s commitment to strengthen the rural economy and encourage natural farming practices.

As announced in the state budget for the financial year 2025-26, the government will purchase turmeric produced using natural farming at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 90 per kilogram. This measure aims to provide a reliable income for farmers, ensure the promotion of eco-friendly farming techniques, and bolster the state’s rural economy.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the move will not only provide farmers with a guaranteed minimum support price but will also encourage natural farming in Himachal Pradesh. The Agriculture Department will oversee the registration process for farmers and will offer training in natural farming techniques to ensure quality and sustainable practices.

The turmeric purchased from registered farmers will be processed at the Spice Park in Hamirpur. The processed turmeric will be marketed under the brand name ‘Himachal Haldi,’ which will help give it a unique identity in the market while ensuring high-quality products.

“This is the first time the state government will directly purchase raw turmeric from farmers,” Sukhu stated. “This step will empower farmers economically and offer livelihood opportunities in rural areas, where agricultural activities play a vital role.”

In addition to turmeric, the state government is also purchasing wheat and maize grown through natural methods at a support price of Rs 60 per kg and Rs 40 per kg, respectively. Furthermore, the support price for milk has been increased by Rs 21 per liter in the last two years, with cow milk now being purchased at Rs 51 per liter and buffalo milk at Rs 61 per liter.

Turmeric cultivation is already widespread in Himachal Pradesh, with around 2,042.5 hectares dedicated to its farming, producing approximately 24,995 metric tonnes annually. The districts of Hamirpur, Kangra, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, Mandi, and Solan are the leading producers. Turmeric’s medicinal properties, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, have led to increased demand in both domestic and international markets, making it an important livelihood option for farmers.

One of the key advantages of turmeric cultivation is its resilience to wild animals, particularly monkeys, and its relatively low labor requirements. Additionally, turmeric has a long shelf life post-harvest, making it an ideal crop for farmers in Himachal Pradesh, who face numerous agricultural challenges.

The event also saw the presence of Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani, MLA Vinod Sultanpuri, Vice President of Himachal Pradesh Forest Development Corporation Kewal Singh Khachi, and Secretary Agriculture C. Palrasu.
