Jairam Thakur Asks Government to Extend Budget Session for Discussion
Shimla, 9 March: Opposition Leader Jairam Thakur, while addressing the media after exiting the all-party meeting’ called by the Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, stated that they were firm on relevant issues of concern’ during the coming budget session and need time to discuss them. The meeting was cordial, said Thakur (accompanied by BJP MLA Sukhram Chaudhary) but he noted the shortage of time available in the present session to adequately handle pressing issues facing the people of Himachal Pradesh.
Thakur expressed concern about the time being reduced for the session in view of a series of issues that needed urgent attention. “There are lots of important issues that we’ll need to address in the Assembly. The government has flunked in various aspects, and they should be accountable on these issues of public interest,” said Thakur. He further stated that people’s wellbeing has been ignored by the government which has lead to resentment among the masses in the state.
The Leader of the Opposition commented by stating that due to the deteriorating health system, law and order, an ever-worsening drug epidemic and the government’s total incapacity to solve any of these issues, the people were suffering from huge problems. “The local people of Himachal are reeling under the anti-people policies of the government. Rallies are erupting across the state and discontent is rife across all segments of society. The health sector is in a shambles, law and order has been completely broken down, drug addiction is widespread, claiming the lives of many young people,” he added.
Thakur said discussion time would be needed as the budget session usually starts with the Governor’s address. After the address, lawmakers will debate issues surrounding the state’s budget, and political party members are expected to voice the concerns of their respective constituencies. These issues were so crucial, according to Thakur, that a truncated session would kill the chance to have the debates that mattered.
Responding to questions from the media about the time frame of the session, Thakur said, “There is a lot of important work that needs to be done but the current duration of the session is insufficient. In order to bring every issue to the fore, the government should extend the session so that there is enough time for debate and discussion.”
Thakur, demanding the extension of House session, checked the public demand to properly raise the issues of the state and every region in the House.
