Bilaspur, 2 March – In a major breakthrough as part of its anti-drug action, the Bilaspur Police on Sunday seized 298.67 grams of hashish from a car near the Baloh Toll Plaza. They arrested two people, one an Indian national and the other a foreign national, for their role in the drug trafficking operation.

They have been identified as Rhythm Bisht, 24, a resident of Sector-66, Mohali, Punjab, and Sergio Lampayev Namburate Junior, 25, a Mozambique national who resides in the Housefied Complex of Sector-79, Mohali. They were stopped by the Special Detection Team at the check post near the toll plaza while they were in the car (PB65AX8671).

How the Smugglers Were Caught

Bilaspur Police’s Special Detection Team had set up a checkpoint on Sunday afternoon, as part of routine checks, near Baloh Toll Plaza. The police stopped a suspicious vehicle with the registration number, PB65AX8671. The hashish was hidden in the car, the officers found when they searched it. The team arrested both the suspects on the spot and seized the narcotic material from them.

Preliminary inquiries indicated that the arrested had procured the contraband from a location in Himachal Pradesh and were all set to ferry it to Punjab. The arrest came just in time to stop what police say was a possible drug distribution operation from arriving to its destination.

NDPS Act Case Filed

A case has been registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Ghumarwin Police Station. Rhythm Bisht and Sergio Lampayev Namburate Junior were both charged with drug trafficking as the authorities carry on investigating the case.

However, the Bilaspur DSP Madan Dhiman said the operation was a success because a local youth was among those arrested and that international drug smuggler was also caught. He said that the police are probing the scale of the smuggling, including the original source of the narcotics, and possible buyers in Punjab.

“We are focused on arresting and prosecuting drug smugglers and dismantling their networks. It is a big achievement in our battle against drug trade and we are committed to continue the efforts to wipe out drug use in Himachal Pradesh,” DSP Dhiman said.

Boosting Confidence Among Locals

Local residents, who have long raised concerns about drug smuggling in the area, felt confident after a swift action taken by the law enforcement.” They are determined to bolster their endeavors towards public security and the rampant drug menace.

The administration has been ramping up such surveillance and enforcement action across Bilaspur and the entire state as part of a continuing crackdown on drugs. In addition, local police are also calling for public cooperation, asking those with information on drug activities to come forward and report to the authorities.

This accomplishment of Bilaspur Police by crushing this international smuggling business is a strict message for drug traffickers and at the same time a booster dose for the administration towards curbing drug trade. The support of the community allows law enforcement to remove more drugs from the state, they said.
