The state is experiencing drought-like conditions this January due to a significant reduction in rainfall and snowfall. From January 1 to 24, rainfall has been recorded at 75% less than the usual levels, leading to concerns over water resources and agriculture. With limited precipitation this month, the weather outlook indicates that clear skies are expected to continue until January 28, offering little relief from the dry conditions.

Typically, the region receives around 57.5 mm of rainfall during this period, but this year, only 14.7 mm of snowfall has been recorded, further contributing to the dry conditions. The stark difference between expected and actual precipitation highlights the severity of the weather anomaly, with the state experiencing a significant rainfall deficit that could impact agriculture, water supply, and overall climate patterns.

The Meteorological Department has forecast clear weather across the state from January 24 to January 28, providing some relief from the dry conditions. However, a cold wave alert has been issued for the next two days, affecting the plain areas of Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Bilaspur. Residents in these regions are advised to take precautions against the chilly temperatures as the cold wave sweeps through these areas.

Sandeep Sharma, a scientist at the Meteorological Center Shimla, explained that the recent dry spell was due to the western disturbance not becoming fully active. As a result, the weather has remained clear across most parts of the state, with little precipitation. The lack of active disturbances has contributed to the ongoing drought-like conditions, prolonging the dry weather pattern for the region.

The Meteorological Department has forecasted that the western disturbance will become active again on January 29, bringing a potential shift in weather patterns. This could lead to snowfall on the high peaks of Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur, offering a much-needed break from the dry conditions. The snowfall is expected to improve the weather in these areas, especially for the higher altitudes, which have been experiencing a lack of precipitation so far this month.
