Cabinet Greenlights Hemp Cultivation Study in Himachal, Allocates Rs 56 Crore for Robotic Surgery

Dharamshala (Kangra) Himachal Pradesh, Kumud Sharma, January 24: Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu presided over the State Cabinet meeting in Dharamshala, Kangra district, on Friday. During the meeting, the Cabinet approved the extension of the special relief package introduced for disaster-affected families in 2023 to those impacted by the devastating fire in Tandi village, Kullu district. As part of the relief, families whose homes were completely damaged will receive Rs 7 lakh, those with partially damaged houses will be given Rs 1 lakh, and families with damaged cow sheds will be provided Rs 50,000. This initiative aims to support the recovery and rebuilding efforts of the affected families in Tandi village.

In addition to the immediate relief package, the Cabinet decided to provide monthly assistance of Rs 5,000 to the affected families for house rent payments until June 30, 2025, offering further support during their recovery. Furthermore, the Cabinet approved the procurement of advanced machinery and equipment for robotic surgery at two key healthcare facilities—the Atal Super Specialty Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMSS) in Chamiyana and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda, Kangra. This state-of-the-art equipment, to be acquired at a cost of Rs 56 crore, is aimed at enhancing medical services and bringing world-class healthcare closer to the people, in line with the standards set by AIIMS, New Delhi.

The Cabinet also approved an amendment to the Forest Department’s previous order, allowing the extraction of Kashmir roots with a revised cut-off date of February 15, 2025. In addition, the Cabinet granted permission for the transportation of forest produce extracted from open spaces before January 4, 2025, in accordance with the Himachal Pradesh Forest Produce Transit (Land Routes) Rules, 2013, until February 15, 2025. In a significant move to enhance tourism, the Cabinet also sanctioned the establishment of a ropeway connecting Kullu Bus Stand to Pij Paragliding Point. This new transport facility will provide tourists with safe and convenient access, further promoting tourism activities and boosting the local economy.

The Cabinet approved the filling of nine vacant posts of Block Development Officers in the Rural Development Department to strengthen administrative capacity at the grassroots level. In a move to enhance infrastructure development, it was decided to reorganize the Public Works Department’s National Highway Circle in Shahpur by creating two new divisions—Nankhari and Kholighat—along with the Kharahan section. To improve passenger comfort, the Cabinet also greenlit the purchase of 24 air-conditioned super luxury buses for the Himachal Road Transport Corporation. Additionally, the Cabinet approved the allocation of 100 motorcycles to regional offices of the State Tax and Excise Department, aimed at improving enforcement and enabling surprise inspections for better compliance across the state.

The Cabinet approved a pilot study on hemp cultivation, a collaborative effort between Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agricultural University in Palampur, Kangra district, and Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Solan district. The study will assess the feasibility and potential of hemp cultivation, providing recommendations for future strategies. The Department of Agriculture was designated as the nodal department to oversee this initiative. In another important decision, the Cabinet approved the inclusion of employees working in the offices of three Divisional Commissioners, the Director of Land Records, the Revenue Training Institute in Jogindernagar (Mandi), the Directorate of Land Consolidation in Shimla, as well as the Settlement Offices in Kangra and Shimla under the State Cadre. This move is intended to streamline administrative processes and bring greater uniformity to the functioning of these offices.
In the meeting, the Cabinet approved renaming several educational institutions to honor prominent figures. Government College Seema in Shimla district will now be known as Raja Virbhadra Singh Government College Seema, while the Girls’ Sports Hostel at GGSSS, Jubbal, will be renamed Ramlal Thakur GGSSS Sports Hostel (Girls). Additionally, Government College Khadd in Una district will be designated as Mohan Lal Dutt Government College Khadd. A detailed presentation was also made on reviving the stalled hydro power projects, outlining strategies for their timely completion. Furthermore, discussions were held on reorganizing the directorates within the Education Department to enhance efficiency and administrative effectiveness.
