Concerns Over Substandard Pipes in Irrigation Projects Prompt Probe in Himachal Pradesh
Jal Shakti Department Investigates Alleged Quality Issues in Irrigation Schemes
Concerns have emerged regarding the quality of materials used in irrigation schemes across Himachal Pradesh, prompting an investigation by the Jal Shakti Department. Allegations have surfaced about substandard pipes and improper installations, raising questions about the procurement process and the effectiveness of these vital water supply projects.
In the Kyaar-Kamah area of Shimla, serious issues were uncovered during water testing. Pipes burst at multiple locations, and chambers meant to support the system collapsed under minimal pressure. It was revealed that smaller pipes, measuring just 2.5 inches, had been installed instead of the required 5 to 6-inch pipes. Additionally, many of the pipes were left exposed rather than being buried, exacerbating the damage and rendering the system ineffective.
A team from the Jal Shakti Department, including senior engineers, conducted an inspection of the affected sites. The team confirmed several issues, including the inadequate pipe sizes and exposed installations. Officials assured residents that the damaged pipes would be replaced with new ones to restore the functionality of the irrigation scheme.

Unfortunately, these concerns are not limited to this particular project. Similar problems have been reported in irrigation schemes throughout the state, raising fears of widespread negligence. Many projects have stalled after pipes burst during testing or chambers failed under even minimal pressure. The use of substandard materials has led to delays and disruptions in essential water supply initiatives, causing frustration among farmers and residents who rely on these systems.
The Chief Engineer has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and strict action will be taken against those responsible for the negligence. Contractors, suppliers, and officials involved in the procurement and execution of these projects will likely face scrutiny.
As more irregularities come to light, public outrage has been growing. Residents are demanding accountability and a thorough review of quality control measures for future projects. The state government now faces the task of addressing these issues and restoring the public’s trust in its irrigation initiatives.
