The Himachal Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious plan to install rooftop solar systems on 50,000 homes by 2026-27, marking a key step in its commitment to renewable energy development. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the initiative has already garnered significant public interest, with 4,444 applications received so far.

In parallel, the state has successfully installed a 2 Megawatt (MW) solar power plant in the remote tribal region of Kaza, which is set to become fully operational soon. The plant will be further supported by a 1 Megawatt-hour (MWh) battery storage system. This project is expected to enhance power supply in the area while also contributing to the state’s broader renewable energy objectives.

The government’s rooftop solar program is designed to promote the adoption of solar energy in households, which will reduce reliance on traditional electricity sources and lower energy costs. To facilitate wider participation, the scheme offers financial incentives and simplifies the application process for residents.

This initiative forms part of a larger strategy to expand Himachal Pradesh’s solar energy infrastructure. Additionally, the government has approved the installation of 18 Megawatts of ground-mounted and rooftop solar plants near Electricity Board offices, and is planning to set up electric vehicle charging stations across the state.

Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that these efforts are aligned with the state’s vision of becoming a ‘Green State’ and achieving energy self-reliance. He also noted that rationalizing electricity subsidies and revising power project agreements are crucial steps being taken to ensure the financial sustainability of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL).
